AI and autonomous technology

Self-driving cars have been a huge talking point in the industry for several years. Most manufacturers now offer self-driving technology as part of their latest models – with most used to improve road safety.

Let’s take a look at lane keeping systems and how they can improve driver safety. These intelligent systems keep you within your lane when driving on the motorway. When motorway driving, it’s vital that you stay firmly in your lane, unless you are overtaking. This system alerts you with a vibration on the steering wheel if your vehicle is unintentionally edging out of its lane – and in circumstances when the vehicle thinks you are reacting too slow, the vehicle will take control and provide steering torque to divert you back into the safe space on your lane. This is a safety feature to prevent drivers from veering out of their lane on motorways and dual carriageways where drivers around them are driving at high speeds.

Blind spot information systems (or BLIS) are another clever innovation designed to keep us safe on the roads. When a vehicle enters your blind spot zone, the BLIS system will alert you. The detection area is on both sides of your vehicle, extending rearward from the exterior mirrors to approximately 10 feet (3 meters) beyond the bumper. The system alerts you via a small light on your side wing mirrors – when there is a vehicle in your blind spot zone, the light will illuminate. When your blind spot zone is clear, the light will switch off.

When drivers exceed the speed limit, ISA (Intelligent Safety Assist) technology uses a combination of audio and visual signals to send an alert. By using GPS, the system is able to detect the vehicle location and reference this with a digital road map that is programmed with speed limit information for each road. The system can be used as an active speed limiter whereby it can take control of the vehicle and reduce the speed when travelling above the speed limit. It does this by reducing the throttle signal. Additionally, the system is also fitted with a speed limiting function that increases the pressure on the accelerator when you exceed the speed limit, so that it is harder to accelerate and break the speed limit.

Comfort and eco features

JLR are leading the way in weather adaptation, by equipping all of their new models with the technology. The system allows cars to autonomously adapt to weather changes and situations to make adjustments to drivetrain, suspension, traction control and climate control for optimum efficient driving. The system is said to be able to connect to present and future weather data via telematics and GPS to sensibly adapt both inside the cabin and around the exterior. One feature suggests that the system will automatically close your vehicle windows if it senses that rain is forecast. Onboard rain- and terrain-sensing mechanisms will be used to control the temperature, pressure and humidity inside the cabin, whilst interior and exterior lighting will be altered depending on the circumstances.

This helpful gadget should be rolled out by 2020, so we don’t have to wait much longer to see it in action!

Of course, the popularity of EV’s has led to manufacturers adapting their offerings to include more eco-friendly features and models. With news of how air pollution is negatively impacting our planet and quality of life, automotive manufacturers have been striving to develop all-electric models. An increase in EV charging services from suppliers such as Northern Powergrid and the widespread availability of charging points has meant that the market looks set to take off once again.

Another manufacturer who has been leading the way when it comes to innovative eco tech is Nissan. The new Nissan Leaf not only has double the mileage range of its previous model equivalents, but the one-pedal driving system allows for the accelerator pedal to be transformed into a multifunctioning e-pedal at a touch. The e-pedal functions as a start, stop, accelerate and breaking pedal when activated. Suitable for 90% of urban driving, the system means that the car will slow to a halt by itself with the ability to hold itself on an incline without the need of the brake pedal.

The ECO-pedal system can control the acceleration speed so that the engine doesn’t over-rev. The level of fuel-efficient driving is displayed through a colour and flashing Eco-P lamp. According to Nissan, studies have proven that effective eco-driving with the ECO-pedal can contribute to an improved fuel efficiency by 5-10%.

So, there we have it – there are a number of new tech innovations on the horizon. With a positive future of technology ahead of us, we can expect to see the driving process, and experience, completely transformed in the coming years.

Vehicle tax bands

Vehicle excise duty — also known as VED and sometimes referred to as road tax — is a fee that no-one with a van can avoid in the UK. Put simply, it’s the charge you need to pay in order to legally drive your vehicle on public roads across the nation.

Unlike road tax for a car, whereby the rate is partially determined by the car’s CO2 emissions, a van’s VED is set at a flat rate that will be dependent on the age of the vehicle. For the 2017/18 financial year, the rate is set at £132 for six months or £240 for 12 months for all vans which were built after March 1st 2001 and come under the TC39 VED tax code.

However, there are a number of commercial vehicles which have a TC36 VED code. These are either Euro 4 vans which were registered between March 1st 2003 and December 31st 2006 or Euro 5 vans registered between January 1st 2009 and December 31st 2010. If you drive a qualifying vehicle under this banner, for the 2017/18 financial year the rate is set at £77 for six months or £140 for 12 months.

If you happen to drive a commercial vehicle that was manufactured before March 1st 2001 though, there will be yet another rate to be aware of — this time based on the van’s engine size. If your van’s engine measures in at no more than 1,549cc, the rate for the 2017/18 financial year will be set at £82.50 for six months or £150 for 12 months. For vans with an engine size that’s above 1,549cc, the rate for the 2017/18 financial year is calculated at £134.75 for six months or £245 for 12 months.

Cheapest band: Vans with a TC36 VED code — £77 for six months or £140 for 12 months.

Most expensive band: Vans built before March 1st 2001 and with an engine size that’s above 1,549cc — £134.75 for six months or £245 for 12 months.

Fuel costs

According to BBC News, the average price of a litre of fuel across the UK now sits at an estimated £1.16 for petrol and £1.18 for diesel. However, these prices change frequently and can also be influenced by unexpected scenarios. For instance, the effects of Hurricane Harvey in the US in August resulted in the RAC predicting that petrol prices in the UK was on course to rise above 121p per litre — the highest level recorded since 2014.

There is a lot less unpredictability seen when it comes to charging an electric vehicle though. With the average overnight electricity rate in the UK being 13p per kWh, Pod Point has calculated that it will cost £3.64 to fully charge a 30kW Nissan LEAF at home and then receive around 115 miles of range.

It is recommended that a dedicated home chargepoint is set up to achieve this, which will amount to a £400 one-off cost through the government’s OLEV grant — however, £400 + £3.64 per 115 miles of range per full charge is likely to work out considerably cheaper than filling a tank of a petrol or diesel vehicle in the long-term.

Emission charges

In a bid to improve the air quality around the capital city, the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) scheme was introduced in 2008 and could result in more costs for employers if their fleet doesn’t meet the emission standards. In addition to this, the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is set to be implemented in April 2019 – meaning that buses, coaches and lorries will have to meet the standards too or pay a charge.

With these expenses, in addition to the existing congestion charge that vehicles must pay for driving through the city, owning a fleet that is not environmentally friendly could have massive economic implications on your business.

Although the scheme is currently only operating in London, as the government have air pollution targets to reach, it might not be long before we see this scheme in cities across the country.

An ideal eco-friendly city car, the BMW i3 is exceptionally easy to drive – and is amongst some of the fastest electric cars on the planet. This has led critics to compare BMW’s eco warrior to similar models by Nissan, Chevrolet, and Ford – all of which prioritise speed and overall performance.

Visually, the design of BMW i3 is in-keeping with the manufacturer’s changing aesthetic. Robust, and perhaps slightly bulky, the Bavarian auto-engineering specialists have gone all-out to ensure this vehicle performs exceptionally well.

And reaching impressive heights of 0-60 mph in 7.2, no one can fault BMW’s incredible accomplishments.

Although this vehicle has now been discontinued by Toyota, it still remains a firm favourite amongst eco-conscious drivers who still value overall performance. The RAV 4 EV is also a great alternative to Tesla motors (if you feel that way inclined).

Nurburgring Nordschleife, a prototype of Honda NSX has been driver for a lap test run when the car suddenly bursts into flames.

Witnesses started to see flames coming out from the rear of the car which have the driver forced to stop at Pflanzgarten in the report of worldcarfans.com. In just few moments, the prototype car was completely covered by flames and almost 60-percent of the car burnt-damaged.


It maybe a faulty electrical wiring or something might have gone bad on its mid-mounted V6 engine.


Under the hood of the 2015 Honda NSX is a mid-mounted V6 engine which will paddle up the rear wheels paired with two electric motors, boasting a unique driving system called the ‘Sport Hybrid Super Handling All Wheel Drive’ (SH-AWD). There will be also a third motor which is integrated into the dual-clutch transmission.

At the New York International Auto Show, Lexus have just shown off its latest flagship line the 2015 Lexus NX. Accordingly, the Lexus’ NX 200t F Sport was in the limelight in the showroom for the event, and spectators might have just forgotten there’s still a 300h downstair.

The Lexus NX 30oh is the hybrid variant and features the vehicle’s standard trim which basically the F Sport-specific seats within the car is omitted. Instead, the interior is upholstered in a classy peanut butter colored leather.

And while the event’s crowd focuses on the 200t F Sport variant, in reality the buying crowd might be grabbing the Lexus NX’s standard trim.

The need for environmentally friendly cars is growing. The price of petrol is continuing to increase due to inflation, and the rising international price of oil. There is also the pressing need to reduce carbon emissions. The UK Government passed the Climate Change Act in 2008 in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 34% by 2020, and 80% by 2050.

This has become such a prominent concern for government that they have planned to invest £1bm, along with 27 auto industry companies, in a new advanced propulsion centre. This facility will focus on researching and developing low-carbon engines that produce less pollution.

There are four types of environmentally friendly cars at present:

Hybrid Cars

A hybrid car uses two power sources including the traditional internal combustion engine, and one or more electric motors. These vehicles use less fuel by storing energy in a battery. They use the electric motor rather than engine in slow traffic. Hybrid cars are already available in the UK. Diesel hybrids are also becoming available.

Plug-in Hybrid Cars

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is a car that combines an energy storage device, such as rechargeable batteries. The plug-in hybrid does exactly what it says on the tin, you can pug them into external electric power sources. You may have seen these in the car parks of new supermarket builds. There are only a few plug-in hybrids available in the UK, but numbers should increase in the future.

Electric Cars

Electric cars utilize one electric motor that uses energy from storage devices, such as rechargeable batteries. This is the perfect alternative to current cars as they do not rely on oil and do not emit pollutants. Electric cars are available in the UK with more due to be released.

Fuel Cell Cars

A fuel cell vehicle is a type of car that has an electric motor powered by an electricity producing fuel cell. The fuel cells use hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. There are currently no fuel cell cars available in the UK, there have however been demonstrations of fuel cell capabilities in black cabs and busses in London. The hydrogen-powered Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell is currently under development and should be built by 2015.

There are many reasons why we should look to switching to environmentally friendly transportation. These vehicles can help us save the environment by reducing carbon. We will be consuming less fossil fuel
which will eventually help reduce our dependency on oil.

The general public is now more aware of environmental concerns and gas prices have risen. Alternatively-fueled vehicles have become much more popular, with almost 500,000 purchased in the United States in 2012, and hybrids and pure electric autos are the most readily-available options. Hybrids use both a gas-powered and electric engine. The electric engine can be charged from a power supply but also generates energy itself from regenerative braking. The most popular hybrid in the United States is the Chevy Volt, while the most popular electric car is the Nissan Leaf.

One worry about electric autos can be put to rest. Their batteries use nickel, whose production is environmentally damaging. A leading car news website reported that the British newspaper, the Mail on Sunday, had published an article stating that a nickel factory at Sudbury in Canada devastated the environment to such an extent that NASA used it to simulate the moon in the training of astronauts. The newspaper removed the article from its website when a reader complained that the damage occurred more than 30 years ago, since when sulfur dioxide emissions have been reduced by over 90 percent and the owner of the facility, Inco, has been praised by the Ontario Ministry of Environment and environmental groups.

Electric cars are eligible for a discount of as much as 50 percent on vehicle registration tax. Electric autos cost more, principally due to their batteries, but the cost of batteries will fall in the future and costs can be reduced by renting rather than buying them. Electric cars require less maintenance as they have fewer moving components.

Electric vehicles have limited range, causing “range anxiety” when greater distances must be traversed. The range can be as little as 40 miles or as much as the 265 miles of the Tesla Model S, but is usually around 100 miles. Electric cars would be fine for driving to work and running errands, but if you have to drive greater distances, a hybrid is preferable. You won’t be conducting road trips in an electric auto. A hybrid can manage around 400 miles, but every gadget you use diminishes battery life, from plugging in your iPod to turning on the heating or air conditioning.

You won’t have to ensure that you are home every night to charge a hybrid. Its use of gas entails that you’ll never be stranded. With electric autos, if you are home every evening and possess a garage with electricity, there’ll be no problem, but charging won’t be easy if you reside in an apartment or park on the street. Worse still, your day could be extended or you may find you have extra errands to perform. Charging points are becoming more widespread, particularly in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon, but time will be required before they are always to hand.

The choice between a hybrid or electric auto partly depends upon your location. Electric cars may produce no emissions, but require electricity that might have been generated by coal or natural gas, which produces greenhouse gases. More greenhouse gases can arise from charging an electric auto than driving an efficient hybrid. The key is whether your state uses nuclear or renewable energy. Electric cars won’t be the most climate-friendly option in Florida, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee, or Texas. They would, however, be better in Idaho, New Hampshire, Oregon, Vermont, or Washington.

The big question, is there really a market for luxury hybrid diesel sedan?

Apparently, the market segment isn’t like to BMW ActiveHybrid 7, Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid, Lexus LS600hL or Porsche Panamera Hybrid. We can’t also consider the sales performance of the Q7, as it’s in the SUV segment which recorded 50/50 for gasoline and TDI, respectively.

Audi announces pricing and fuel economy for 2014 Audi A8 L TDI® clean diesel

Pricing starts at $82,500 for the first ever 2014 Audi A8 L TDI® clean diesel with an EPA estimated fuel efficiency of 24 city/ 36 highway/ 28 combined MPG

The Audi A8 has set new standards for the luxury sedan in terms of interior and exterior design, technology, performance and efficiency. Now equipped with the new 3.0 liter TDI clean diesel engine, the 2014 Audi A8 L TDI represents a dramatic expansion of the flagship sedan and the first of four new TDI models to be introduced this year.

Starting at $82,500, the A8 L TDI clean diesel, with quattro® all-wheel drive, makes a powerful statement in achieving the best fuel economy in its segment with an EPA estimated 24/ 36/ 28 mpg (city/ highway/ combined), while at the same time generating an impressive 240 horsepower, 406 lb.-ft. of torque that seamlessly launches 0-60 MPH in 6.4 seconds.

For the 2014 Audi A8 L TDI, the package options were optimized to better reflect customer demand. The available Premium Package now consists of Audi side assist and pre sense rear, 22-way multi-contour comfort seats, font seat ventilation with massage and full LED headlights.
