Have you just purchased a new or used 2015/2016/2017 Subaru WRX? With its 2.0 litre, four-cylinder, turbo, 268 horsepower engine it sounds awesome and you are no doubt enjoying its insane ability to fly from zero to 100km per hour in a mere five seconds, as well as quick and precise shifts thanks to its stock 6-speed manual transmission!

But, you find yourself wanting to take your WRX’s performance to the next level, so you begin considering different performance mods available in order to crank things up a notch. In this article, we take a look at five of the best performance mods you should take into account when wanting to maximise the performance of your WRX.

Larger Top Mount Intercooler

Drawing air via the hood scoop, a small top mount intercooler is a stock feature of 2015 to 2017 WRX models. Despite doing a reasonable job of cooling compressed air that originates from the engine’s turbocharger, it is unfortunately prone to heat soak, particularly in situations such as driving at low speeds or being caught in crawling traffic. This can lead to choking at high RPMs. So if you want to reduce the chance of damage to your engine while simultaneously maximising performance, you should consider upgrading from your stock small top mount intercooler to a much larger one.

Despite the fact that many car enthusiasts insist you should opt for a front mount intercooler due to optimal efficiency when it comes to cooling (thanks to better airflow), upgrading your top mount intercooler is in fact the best way to go for your WRX. Going ahead with a top mount intercooler upgrade allows you to avoid additional piping that is needed for a front mount, and instead you can utilise an OEM charge pipe. A reduction in turbo lag as well as a faster turbo response are additional benefits of shorter intercooler piping.

The Subaru Accessport V3 by Cobb Tuning

Making changes to your ride’s ECU mapping is one of the ultimate ways to spice up the performance of your WRX. A number of 2015 to 2017 WRX owners are in agreement when it comes to the somewhat undesirable stock engine tuning and annoying rev hang.

In order to combat these issues, Cobb Tuning has what you need when it comes to replacing factory module settings – the Cobb Subaru Accessport V3, one of the top Subaru ECU upgrade solutions available out there. More track-worthy, aggressive calibrations assist in facilitating livelier driving dynamics, ultimately resulting in an increase in power and torque.

Boasting a high-resolution, full-colour screen and customisable gauge display, the Accessport V3 is mounted in your car and enables the creation of custom maps, thanks to its preloaded Cobb “Off The Shelf” (OTS) maps. What this device gives you is real-time monitoring of some of the most sought-after engine parameters, including air-fuel sensor readings and injection pulse width, in addition to engine RPM. Performance parameters able to be measured include trap speed alongside 0 to 100 km/h time.

A Cold Air Intake System

When looking to increase the performance of your 2015 to 2017 WRX, you should consider upgrading your air intake system, which may result in not only increased power, but also greater acceleration and more desirable fuel economy. This is due to the fact that a bigger, hardier air intake system adds more oxygen to the fuel mix in your vehicle’s engine.

You might wish to go with a cold air intake system or a short ram air intake system. The latter positions the air filter in close proximity to the engine (therefore it is able only to draw in warm air near to the engine), and involves short, wide piping. In contrast, a cold air intake system includes piping of greater length, and therefore the air filter sits further away from the engine.

Despite being more affordable due to its small structure and therefore ease of installation and service, a short ram air intake system provides a lesser amount of additional horsepower in comparison to a cold air intake system. Therefore, when it comes to selecting the right air intake system for you, take into account your system needs as well as your hip pocket.

Downpipe (J-Pipe)

Another undeniable way to raise fuel economy and performance is by superseding your stock WRX downpipe with one of larger size. Referred to as a ‘j-pipe’ thanks to its shape, the downpipe is responsible for channelling turbocharger exhaust away from the engine towards the exhaust system.

A potential output increase of 40 horsepower is possible thanks to the increased size and width of a j-pipe replacement, which has the ability to expel additional turbocharger exhaust as well as to reduce engine temperature and turbo lag.

With the majority of aftermarket downpipes manufactured from stainless steel, they can be installed with or without a catalytic converter. You will also require a mid-pipe of similar size, which like the j-pipe comes “catted” or “catless”.

Replacing your stock j-pipe is a no brainer when it comes to maximising the performance of your WRX!

Catback Exhaust

With the majority made from stainless steel and finished with quad exhaust tips, an aftermarket catback exhaust is a brilliant way to up the performance of your 2015 to 2017 WRX, by means of improving the free flow of exhaust gases. This enables the turbo engine to breathe more easily thanks to a reduction in exhaust pressure. Additional benefits of this mod include heightened horsepower and improved fuel efficiency.

Topical benefits of a catback exhaust mod consist of a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note and a look that is sportier and track-ready.

Where Do I Find The Best Mods For My WRX?

When it comes to maximising the performance of your 2015 to 2017 WRX, be sure to purchase any mods you desire from sellers with established reputations. In some cases, you may even be able to snag a package deal. There are also a large range of hot looking Subaru Bodykits that are worth while considering if you want your ride to get some extra attention.

197bhp-Ford Fiesta ST200 price starts at £22,745 Tue, 07 Jun 2016 13:27:43 +0000 Ford Fiesta ST200

The new Ford Fiesta ST200 pricing details has just been announced and it will cost you £22,745. Notably, the price range may cross both Peugeot 208 GTi 30th Anniversary, and the more powerful Clio RS 220 Trophy on its class. It could be more expensive but you’ll have a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine gets a boost to a nice round 200PS (or 197bhp) and 214lb-ft of torque. That’s just 6.7s to reach 0-62mph with top speed of 143mph. Not to mention, the additional 14-and-a-bit more horsepower for 20 seconds on overboost, taking 31mph to 82mph for only 5.2s.

Ford also enhance the ride comport with a rear twist-beam that has 27-percent more roll stiffness, the front anti-roll bar has been thickened up to 21mm, which both aid ‘revised’ dampers for better absorption of impacts and stance dropped by 15mm. Added torque vectoring, a three-stage ESP, the steering’s been sharpened up too, and that all-important ‘on-centre’ feel has been improved.

New alloys and spoilers, bigger brakes, side skirts, new Recaro seats, carbon fibre dash inserts, and a system that pipes in engine noise into the cabin —-what more can you ask for?

Could this be Nissan’s GT-R 4-Door Coupe? Sat, 04 Jan 2014 10:54:24 +0000 Nissan Sport Sedan Concept

Nissan has been teasing for awhile now about a dark image of a car that was called the sports sedan concept.

First on our mind will be a next-generation GT-R, a four-door coupe sporty ride. If you’ll look on the teaser images, you’ll see some of the significant resemblance of the GT-R. However, there’s also another option that we are looking, how about a Maxima replacement, which as we speak badly needed.

Looking at the image, most of the exterior shows off aggressive detailing from the clamshell roof and bulging hood which seemed to be too fancy for a sedan.

Other views, also pointed out the price level of $100,000 for a Nissan sedan, which seemed to be less compelling in the current market when fared to other stable brands.

Now, all we need to do is wait a little longer for the Detroit Auto Show commence and officially unveiled this Nissan’s sporty sedan.

Sponsored Video: The Ford S-Max Concept – the best engine in the world? Mon, 16 Sep 2013 11:43:00 +0000 ford_s-max_concept_front

At the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Ford S-Max Concept vehicle has been revealed, giving a number of clues to what the production version of the MPV will be looking like. The concept is slated to replace the current Ford S-Max that is celebrating its seventh year in Ford’s lineup.

Going against the recently unveiled Ford concepts that used variations of the Iosis or Evos naming convention, the Ford S-Max Concept uses a production car tag, which as industry experts say, suggests that the design is near to a final version. However, despite this the unveiled concept was still constructed from composites and individually scanned prototype components.

According to Martin Smith, Ford’s design director, the S-Max has always been designed to be a “white space” car, which occupies a rather new market sector that was previously unidentified. He says, “We invented the sporty MPV, and it brought new customers to Ford – the sort of people who won’t drive a Galaxy or an estate car.”

Indeed, when asked, customers have described the current S-Max as sporting and dynamic, having a ‘dart-like’ profile. That, Martin says, has been the goal of Ford, to build more of that into the next iteration of the S-Max.

Martin further adds, “We want to tell the world we’ve understood the market. It retains the distinctive shape of the rear window glass, but it has the new face of Ford and more pronounced rear shoulders.”

Powered by a 1.5L, four cylinder EcoBoost engine, the new S-Max is part of a new family of cars that were developed from the 1.0L triple. In its already lengthy existence in the market, it has already captured the attention of buyers with rather deep pockets, with up to 70% of existing owners opting for the more expensive trim of the S-Max. And German’s seemed to agree with this trend.

Now, with the new variant, these same buyers are sure to not be disappointed. The Ford S-Max Concept takes design inspiration from themes at the latest Milan Furniture Fair, which uses warm, dark, brown colors, metal finishes and expensive silk carpeting in achieving its new design exploit of modern luxury theme.

Inside, the versatile interior of the S-Max Concept offers anything from four to seven-seat configurations and places the focus firmly on the driver. The high-set instrument panel, door panels and innovative interior roof design maximise its spaciousness.

Other features of the S-Mac Concept focuses on safety and convenience technologies. A number of such additions include: Intelligent Protection System with Pre-Collision Assist, which identifies pedestrians and automatically applies the brakes if a collision is imminent and Dual-View Display, which allows the driver to receive important information while at the same time other passengers are enjoying a movie on the center console.

Low-Carbon Cars: Everything You Need to Know Thu, 29 Aug 2013 15:11:04 +0000 Toyora Prius Plug-in Hybrid

The need for environmentally friendly cars is growing. The price of petrol is continuing to increase due to inflation, and the rising international price of oil. There is also the pressing need to reduce carbon emissions. The UK Government passed the Climate Change Act in 2008 in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 34% by 2020, and 80% by 2050.

This has become such a prominent concern for government that they have planned to invest £1bm, along with 27 auto industry companies, in a new advanced propulsion centre. This facility will focus on researching and developing low-carbon engines that produce less pollution.

There are four types of environmentally friendly cars at present:

Hybrid Cars

A hybrid car uses two power sources including the traditional internal combustion engine, and one or more electric motors. These vehicles use less fuel by storing energy in a battery. They use the electric motor rather than engine in slow traffic. Hybrid cars are already available in the UK. Diesel hybrids are also becoming available.

Plug-in Hybrid Cars

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is a car that combines an energy storage device, such as rechargeable batteries. The plug-in hybrid does exactly what it says on the tin, you can pug them into external electric power sources. You may have seen these in the car parks of new supermarket builds. There are only a few plug-in hybrids available in the UK, but numbers should increase in the future.

Electric Cars

Electric cars utilize one electric motor that uses energy from storage devices, such as rechargeable batteries. This is the perfect alternative to current cars as they do not rely on oil and do not emit pollutants. Electric cars are available in the UK with more due to be released.

Fuel Cell Cars

A fuel cell vehicle is a type of car that has an electric motor powered by an electricity producing fuel cell. The fuel cells use hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. There are currently no fuel cell cars available in the UK, there have however been demonstrations of fuel cell capabilities in black cabs and busses in London. The hydrogen-powered Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell is currently under development and should be built by 2015.

There are many reasons why we should look to switching to environmentally friendly transportation. These vehicles can help us save the environment by reducing carbon. We will be consuming less fossil fuel
which will eventually help reduce our dependency on oil.

Tesla Model S tops Porsche, Jaguar and Buick sales Wed, 28 Aug 2013 06:55:12 +0000 2013-Tesla-Model-S-front-three-quarter-1

Efficiency and its advance car technology, the Tesla Model S tops the luxury car segment from the recent report of California New Car Dealers Association.

The report shows details that at the first part of the year, Tesla Model S has already dominated the new-vehicle registrations in the luxury car category. These includes 4,714 Model S vehicles registered in California for the first half of 2013, taking off sales from Audi A6 with 1,619 vehicles and Lexus GS with 2,298 units of registrations. These two competitors alone makes the 10-percent of luxury and sports car segment, with Tesla making its way with its own 12-percent.

Apparently, still Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series with registered 6,582 and 6,077 units, respectively owns the top two spot in the luxury car category.

Interestingly, back in 2012 Tesla represents 0-percent share in the car registration chart —-Tesla now owns 0.6-percent share.

Here are the car manufacturers which Tesla overtook from California vehicle registration numbers:

  • Buick 0.5
  • FIAT 0.5
  • Land Rover 0.5
  • Lincoln 0.3
  • Porsche 0.5
  • Mitsubishi 0.3
  • Volvo 0.4
  • Jaguar 0.1

Again these percentages are from California alone, however, considering these numbers —-undoubtedly Tesla is on a pretty good start. And watch out, if the company would launch its affordable electric vehicles, you might see the current numbers of Toyota Prius and Honda Civic as the numbers registered by Tesla in the near future.
