How to maintain your car to run smoothly and efficiently

Posted on 15 September 2014 by Tony Santos

In order for a vehicle to stay running smoothly and efficiently, it needs to be properly maintained at all times. Here are a few maintenance tips that can save money in the long run.

Change the Motor Oil at the Recommended Interval

It is a myth that the motor oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles. In fact, some vehicles can safely travel 7,500 miles before needing an oil change. By ignoring the 3,000-mile oil change myth, drivers can save a lot of money over time. The majority of modern vehicles are equipped with an extremely accurate oil change indicator.

Wheel Alignments and Tire Rotations

The cost of a new set of tires can be relatively expensive. One of the best ways to preserve the life of a set of tires is to obtain a wheel alignment at least once a year. Rotating the tires about every 6,000 miles is an excellent way to avoid premature tire wear.

Replace the Oxygen Sensors

Oxygen sensors have a major impact on a vehicle’s gas mileage. Although an oxygen sensor is designed to last for a very long time, it eventually needs to be replaced. Replacing a vehicle’s oxygen sensors in a timely manner will certainly help to reduce fuel costs, which can save a car owner money every time they refill the tank.

Use the Correct Spark Plugs

Not every vehicle is designed to use the same type of spark plugs. When purchasing a new set of spark plugs, Pittsburgh Toyota maintenance experts urge drivers to consult their owner’s manual, which specifies the correct type of spark plug to use. Installing the correct spark plugs will enable the vehicle to deliver the best possible gas mileage. When installed correctly, most spark plugs will last for at least 30,000 miles.
