Fergie bans Manchester United Chevrolet Partnership

The word around Manchester is that we’ll soon be seeing a few more flashy Chevy Corvettes out driving the streets, as automobile giant Chevrolet has offered members of Manchester United Football Club each a pick of any car from the Chevy lineup. A recently agreed upon sponsorship arrangement, set to kick off for the 2014 playing season, puts Chevrolet and Manchester United into a partnership to increase visibility of the American car maker in the UK.

As part of the arrangement, United’s game jerseys will feature the Chevrolet logo. Also, as a perk typical of these kinds of deals, players will each be given a Chevrolet model of their choice. Each player, that is, who is at least 23 years of age or older. United’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, long known for the tight rein he keeps on his lads, has come out publicly stating that players less than 23 cannot accept a sports car model, namely a Corvette or Camaro. Furthermore, he will personally approve each car selected by the younger players on the squad.

Ferguson, manager of Manchester United since 1986, is the longest-running manager of the club and has won the most honors. During his tenure his team has won the Premier League Championship or earlier Football League First Division 12 times, coming in as runner-up another seven times. He’s obviously doing something right at the helm of the most winning team in English professional football history, which dates back to the 1880s. Prior to Sir Alex, fondly known as “Fergie,” the club only had seven championship wins in the previous century.

Fergie’s reasoning in not letting younger players zip around in a new Corvette or Camaro offered by Chevrolet relates to discipline and safety. He doesn’t want his young, inexperienced members causing undue attention while out and about, doesn’t want them getting too big for their britches and doesn’t want them risking life and limb behind the wheel of a 580 hp Camaro ZL1 or a 638 hp Corvette ZR1 Coupe 3ZR. Those might be okay for Ryan Riggs, well known for his appreciation of fast, expensive cars, but then, he’s 38 years old, well beyond the 23-year old cut off Ferguson has set. Players such as David de Gea (21), Phil Jones (21), Chris Smalling (22), Rafael (22), Nick Powell (18), Bebe (22), Danny Welbeck (21), and Frederico Macheda (21) will just have to wait.
