The Top 10 Most Futuristic Cars

Posted on 04 April 2012 by Tony Santos

If we’re looking at futuristic cars, we should logically look at the carmakers’ latest concepts – the ones that haven’t hit the streets yet but look likely to do so soon. So without further ado, here are our top ten picks from the recent motor shows:

Nissan Esflow

At number one we have the Nissan Eslflow; an electronic car with a design straight from a new James Bond movie. The Eslflow runs on supercharged lithium ion batteries with an 80kW motor. But we love it most for its lines; awesome!

BMW VisionConnected

Hot on its heels, though, is the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive – a two-seater monster of a machine that somehow manages to be both futuristic whilst harking back to the days of the Brooklands racing circuit.

Toyota FT-86 II

In bronze medal position is the Toyota FT-86 II/ Subaru Boxer Sports Car with a D-4S Boxer engine looks the business and its performance is off the scale.

Mini Rocketman

In fourth position the Mini Rocketman lives up to its name with a design that says it clearly is a Mini – but somehow still a lot cooler.

VW Bulli Concept

Just outside the top half sits the VW Combi Bulli which clearly owes its heritage to the Classic Camper van and should be launched very soon. This could well become the coolest family car on the planet.

Alfa Romeo 3C FTA Concept

Next up, we think the Alfa Romeo 3C FTA Concept lives up to its maker’s sleek design heritage. It’s a lightweight vehicle, which looks simply superb and has a performance to match.

2012 Volvo v60 Plug-in Hybrid

Not far behind in is the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid. Hybrid cars have come a long way in recent years and this is one of the coolest ever with a 300 horse power engine which emits only 49g/km of carbon dioxide and fuel consumption of just 1.9 litres per 100 km.

In eighth, we think the Rolls-Royce 102EX electric car is probably the classiest saloon car we’ve ever seen in the modern era. Seeing is believing – but it’s clearly still a Rolls with all the classic styling and quality that implies.

In ninth, the Ford B-Max is a real wedge of a car which is compact but spacious with cleverly sliding rear doors.

And just making the top ten is the Saab PhoeniX with its landmark glasshouse canopy. Another “James Bond” car, the PhoeniX  comes with an 8-inch touch screen and the communication system uses the Google Android platform. It’s very cool – maybe we need to put it nearer the top of the list; this is an impossible task!
