Top sports cars for 2012

With most of the motoring world thinking about fuel economy and all the new eco cars that are coming to the market, it makes a nice change to think about the good, old fashioned values of motoring – speed and performance.

What follows is a quick round up of the hottest two-seater sports cars available this year, and what your money will get you before getting the right speed and performance.

  1. The Lamborghini AventadorLamborghini’s latest sports car gets from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. At $387,000, it’s not something that many people are going to be available to afford, but we can all dream…
  2. The Ferrari 458 Italia – this beautiful car has a 562 horsepower V8 engine and comes as a hardtop Spider or coupé.  It has a maximum speed of 198 mph. This will set you back between $227,000 and $257,000.
  3. The Audi R8 – a new version for 2012 is the Spyder, which will be marketed alongside the sports coupé. These both have mid-engines and offer a great drive. Price ranges from $123,000 to $197,000.
  4. The Jaguar XKR retails at around $103,000. It’s got 510 horsepower and a supercharged V8, and will travel from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
  5. The stalwart of sports cars, the Porsche 911 has been reworked for 2012 and although it’s undergone some technological changes it remains true to its original style. Starting prices are around $80,000.
  6. The Mercedes Benz SLK-Class has been overhauled this year. The little sports car is more aggressive than it was – in performance and in looks. And with a starting price of $55,000, is within the reach of a few more people than some of the others in this list.
  7. The Chevrolet Corvette has a fibreglass range of sports cars – which start out at $49,000 and go up to the ultra-powerful ZL1 which retails at over $110,000.
  8. The BMW Z4’s price tag wavers between $48.000 and $64,000 and its most recent reworking sees better styling and a choice of engines.
  9. The Nissan 370Z comes as either a convertible or a coupé, handles really well and has plenty of ooommpphh! Its price range is from $32,000 to $42,000.
  10. The most economical on the list is the Mazda MX-5 Miata at just over $23,000 through to $28,000. The first of the modern day roadsters is affordable to a wider cross-section of drivers and the latest version comes with a choice of a retractable hardtop.

And of course, in this age of environmentally friendly priorities, it wouldn’t be right to produce a list of the best sports cars without including a hybrid. The Jaguar C-X75 will be on sale sometime during 2013, but the price for an eco-friendly top speed of 200mph and going from 0-60 in under three seconds is going to be around the $1 million mark.
