Also making its debut at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show is the new 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT, a fun-to-drive, functional, five-door compact hatchback set to compete against the likes of Ford Focus, Mazda3 and Volkswagen Golf as it boasts more interior space, lighter weight and better fuel economy.

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT is based on the new i30 model specifically designed for the Euro market. Its power comes from a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine making 148 hp and 131 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic, it averages an estimated 28/39 mpg (city/highway).

Compare to its competitors, the new Elantra GT weighs less; with 2,784 pounds (with an automatic), it is 175 pounds lighter than Focus, 151 pounds lighter than Mazda3 and 222 pounds lighter than Golf. While inside it offers more interior space than the Toyota Matrix, Mazda3, Ford Focus and VW Golf and even more cargo space than the Nissan Juke crossover.

The 2013 Elantra GT comes standard with a bunch of technologies including a 172-watt AM/FM/Satellite Radio/CD/MP3 audio system with six-speakers and iPod/USB/auxiliary input jacks, Bluetooth and Hyundai’s new BlueLink infotainment system. Furthermore, buyers can opt for SiriusXM Satellite Radio, real-time NavTraffic and Data services, leather trim, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control and a panoramic sunroof.

Price for the 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT will be announced closer to launch date.
