The best-selling cars in the UK’s list shows that the Ford Fiesta remains in the top slot and you can try it at UK Car Hire before taking it to your garage.

2012 Ford Fiesta

According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the list looks like this based on the latest data available:

1. Ford Fiesta – 90,701 Sales

2. Ford Focus – 77,785 Sales

3. Vauxhall Corsa –  72,493 Sales

4. Volkswagen Golf –  59,337 Sales

5. Vauxhall Astra –  57,719 Sales

6. Vauxhall Insignia –  43,830 Sales

7. Volkswagen Polo –  43,250 Sales

8. BMW 3 Series – 40,212 Sales

9. Nissan Qashqai –  36,826 Sales

10. MINI – 33,139 Sales

So the Ford Fiesta is the top selling car of 2011 comfortably ahead of its slightly bigger brother, the Ford Focus in second place.

The average new car’s fuel economy rose to over 52 mpg, a massive increase of 29.3% compared to 2001 – reflecting the increasing cost of fuel.

What is particularly interesting about the data is that a record 1.6% of the cars that were sold in November were alternatively fuelled cars (i.e. neither petrol nor diesel). Such a small percentage may seem insignificant, but watch it grow from here. The eco cars UK buyers are looking for are on the up – whilst most of  the latest models being paraded by the world’s major car manufacturers at all the recent motor shows like Frankfurt and Tokyo, seem to be electric or hybrid vehicles.

The SMMT says that the new car market continues to trade around 20% below pre-recession levels. All the major car makers are working to improve their new car offers against a difficult economic back-drop. The outlook for new car sales in 2012 isn’t good.
