Celebrated its debut at the 2011 New York Auto Show is the 2012 BMW ActiveE, the first ever production electric automobile of BMW and part of the company’s ongoing strategy to develop environmentally friendly, yet high-performance vehicles.

Power for the BMW ActiveE comes from a synchronous electric motor making 168-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. It can sprints from 0-60 mph in just 9 seconds with a limited top speed of 90 mph to preserve battery charge. The motor is powered by a set of SB LiMotive lithium-ion battery which allows the BMW ActiveE to travel a total of 150 miles on a single charge.

BMW will begin leasing a total of 700 units of the ActiveE starting this fall in metropolitan New York and other select US metropolitan markets. Prices start at $499 a month with a down payment of $2,250 for 24-months. The reservation process will begin in late summer 2011.
