In their goal for developing premium and sustainable mobility solutions, BMW has launched its new sub-brand, the BMW i.

BMW i aims to provide customized mobility solutions across a seamless network of premium products and premium services, focusing on solutions to improve usage of existing parking spaces, as well as intelligent navigation systems with local information, inter modal route planning, and premium car-sharing, said Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG and Chairman of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Two models, the BMW i3 and BMW i8 will be launched under this new sub-brand starting in the year 2013.

The BMW i3 known as the Megacity Vehicle is planned to be an all electric powered vehicle intended to target urban areas. While BMW i8 will be a hybrid car based on BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics concept, whereas it will be designed to have a sporting ability of a high-performance machine but with less fuel consumption and emissions.

Both models will be based on an automotive lightweight design known as the LifeDrive architecture. This concept practically offset the extra 250 to 350 kg of weight typically found in electric powered vehicles. And to do that BMW i will be using aluminum and carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) to lessen the weight of the car thus increasing its range.

But this project is not only for selling cars, apart from being nature friendly, this is expected to create more jobs.
